I've been reading American political blogs again. Fairly benign as vices go, I suppose, but awfully time consuming and frequently rage inducing. Also kind of pointless. The current Republican party's ideology is so completely opposed to my own on every point that there's no chance I'm ever going to be convinced to support them, no matter how suave and polished their prose. So really, the only reason left to keep going is for the train-wreck entertainment value of it all.
(I suppose I could try writing to my congress-person about specific issues, or similar, but I always feel a little awkward about involving myself in American politics on anything like a local level, seeing as how we moved away when I was so young that I have no memories of ever actually living in the states. Also, I'm terribly lazy.)
No matter how many times I encounter it, I don't think I'm ever going to stop being bemused by how little internal consistency and cohesion the big American political parties have, or by how little impact said lack of cohesion has on the eyebrow-searing intensity of partisan feeling there. Maybe I'm biased, but the Republicans in particular just make no sense as a unified party. Big business, xenophobic hawks, libertarians, and Christian extremists...? It's really a marvel of marketing that they manage to hold the party together at all. Granted, labour unions and enivronmentalists make pretty odd bedfellows too, but not on quite the same scale, I think.
While I'm on the subject (or close enough), does anyone know of any good Canadian political blogs? I feel like I'm swamped in news from south of the border these days, but I hardly know what's going on next door.
