Also I would like a pony

revolution
I don't think I really like this 8-hours-of-work-a-day business. I mean, I do like my work, and I would most likely keep going even if I didn't have to do so to earn a living, but eight hours is a bit much.

If I had free reign to divide up my week days however I liked I think they might look something like this:

  • 4 hours work

  • 2 hours volunteering, social action, etc.

  • 2 hours academic study

  • 1 hour interesting, vigorous, uncompetitive exercise

  • 7 hours cleaning, errands, socializing, creative work and misc. free time

  • 8 hours sleep

That would be much better. All the self improvement and productivity I crave, but with much less potential for tedium and eye strain. Unfortunately, that kind of schedule really isn't an option at the moment, and may not be ever -- especially not if I want to be able to keep paying the rent for my apartment. But still. If there's value in thinking about utopias on national or international level (and I would totally argue that there is), I think there's got to be some value in thinking about utopias on the personal, individual level as well.

AGREED.

Although to tell the truth I only get about 4 hours of real work in a day anyway... *collar tug*

That sounds lovely. I feel like I ought to be able to fit academic study, exercise, cleaning, errands, socializing and creative work into my schedule even with an eight hour work day but it seems like my actual schedule always turns into:
- 7 1/4 hours work
- 7 hours sleep
- 1 3/4 hour eating and commuting
- 8 hours family and/or totally wasted time.
I think I need to plan my free time a little better.

Ugh, I know. In theory there should be plenty of time left over at the end of the work day, but somehow it never feels like it. I'm considering keeping a log of my free time for a week or two, just to figure out where all that time is going. I mean, I know a lot of it is wasted on miscellaneous internet distractions, but that doesn't seem to account for all the time lost. It's like there's some kind of very personal dark matter/energy that still hasn't been accounted for.
